Utsira kommune

Utsira ligger ute i Nordsjøen, utenfor Karmøy, 18 km vest for Haugesund. Kommunen er Norges minste målt i folketall, og nest minste i areal.

Utsira har slagordet «Utsira gir energi».  Gjennom prosjektet «Utsira – det grønne og smarte øysamfunnet» er målet å gjøre Utsira til Norges første nullutslipps-kommune innen 2024.

Dette skal Utsira oppnå gjennom å bygge videre på allerede igangsatte initiativ på selvforsyning av energi. De skal også koble alle deler av kommunens virksomhet opp mot FNs bærekraftmål og smartby-veikartet. I sum er målet å snu den negative befolkningstrenden, hindre virksomhetsnedbyggingen, og gjøre Utsira til en attraktiv kommune som setter søkelys på smarte og miljøvennlige løsninger.

Teknologiutviklingsprosjekter skal bidra til at Utsira kan bli et utstillingsvindu for andre samfunn. Utsira har målsetting om å bli et sted som driver et levende teknologilaboratorium (“Living lab”). Samspillet mellom ny teknologi og samfunnet kan bli enestående. Haugaland Kraft AS investerer mer enn 10 millioner kroner og har som mål om å gjøre Utsira til et utstillingsvindu for fornybar energi.

Utsira is located out in the North Sea, outside Karmøy, 18 km west of Haugesund. The municipality is Norway’s smallest by population size, and second smallest in terms of landarea.

Utsira has the slogan “Utsira gives energy”. Through the project “Utsira – the green and smart island community”, the goal is to make Utsira Norway’s first zero-emission municipality by 2024.

Utsira will achieve this by building on already existing self-sufficiency initiatives on energy. They aim to connect all municipal activities to the UN’s sustainability goals and the smart city roadmap – whether it’s transport, waste management, agriculture or tourism.

In sum, the goal is to reverse the declining population trend, prevent businesses from downsizing, and make Utsira an attractive municipality that focuses on smart and environmentally friendly solutions.

Technology development projects will contribute to Utsira becoming a showcase for other societies. Utsira aims to become a place that runs a living technology laboratory (“Living Lab”). The interaction between new technology and society can be unique. Haugaland Kraft is investing more than NOK 10 million and aims to make Utsira a showcase for new renewable energy solutions.
