With the Interreg project HYPERION, the aim is to support regions in their uptake of advanced hydrogen solutions.
The project was granted funding under Smart scope in the Interreg Europe programme, aiming to help make a more competitive and smarter Europe.
Fueling the hydrogen transition
HYPERION has a budget of almost 2.5 million euro, and will run from April 2024 – June 2028.
Over those four years, the the project is mandated to fuel the uptake of hydrogen in European regions, by supporting them in the complex process of taking up advanced hydrogen (H2) solutions in various areas of their economic systems, as a move towards a smart and sustainable economic transition.
An energetic club
Rogaland County Council is one of 11 partners in the HYPERION project.
With it’s know-how and vast technology competence from the energy sector, through decades of leading oil and gas extraction, Rogaland is positioned as Norway’s energy region, and a pivotal actor in Norway’s and Europe’s green transition.
Italian Agency for the development of the Empolese Valdelsa is lead partner in the project.
Other regional partners come from Finland, Romania, Denmark, Poland, Belgium and Spain.
Interregional learning
The eight regions have committed to advance the uptake of hydrogen by creating and supporting regional value chains.
Through interregional learning, the selected regions will work on to:
Understand the state of play in each territory (good practices for uptake of advanced H2 solutions in industry and transport and critical areas requiring better support);
Develop and implement improved policies to support a synergic uptake of advanced H2 solutions in industry and transport;
Create regional ecosystems based on the H2 supply chain, combining production, infrastructure and use and involving key stakeholders;
Build capacity among public authorities to support a shift towards an economic system that integrates advanced H2 solutions in industry and transport.
The Brussels effect
Rogaland and the Stavanger Region are frontrunners in the Norwegian hydrogen adventure, and thanks to our presence in Brussels and our active membership in the regional pillar of Hydrogen Europe, the region was invited onboard to this strategic Interreg project.
Hydrogen Europe, who was part in initiating the project and helping get the consortium established, is a member based interest organization, aiming to accelerate Europe’s hydrogen industry.
In 2021, their Regional Pillar was established, paving the way for a stronger strategic foothold in hydrogen policy among European regions.
