Stavanger Wheels to Victory as Norway’s Best Cycling City

For the second year in a row, Stavanger has been named Norway’s Best Cycling City.

For the second year in a row, Stavanger has been named Norway’s Best Cycling City. The award was presented during the National Cycling Conference on September 4th  and was accepted by Henrik Halleland, Stavanger’s Deputy Mayor.

The recognition comes from the 2024 National Cycling Survey, which gathered feedback from residents nationwide on their local cycling infrastructure.

Halleland expressed both honour and gratitude while accepting the award from Minister of Transport Jon-Ivar Nygård and Eline Oftedal, Secretary General of the National Cyclists’ Association.

Stavanger excelled in key categories such as safety, accessibility of bike paths, and prioritization of cycling in the city’s infrastructure.

Halleland expressed that the prize reflects years of systematic work to improve cycling in Stavanger. However, he recognizes that the job is far from over, and they plan to continue investing in better and safer cycling routes.

The National Cyclists’ Association has been awarding the title of Norway’s Best Cycling City since 2008. Stavanger’s success highlights the city’s commitment to making cycling a safe and convenient mode of transport all year round.

Eline Oftedal praised the city’s achievement:

—Many municipalities are working hard to improve conditions for cyclists, but maintaining this top position since 2022 is a real accomplishment. Stavanger’s consistent efforts have created safer, better cycling conditions for its residents.

Stavanger will host a Cycling Festival from September 5th  to 8th  to celebrate this achievement, featuring a bike parade, free treats for kids, face painting, and skill courses.

The festivities continue throughout the weekend with more family-friendly activities, including competitions and a bike marketplace in Byparken.
